Amy & Ashley’s (Almost) Surprise Whitby Abbey Proposal

Some days just really stick with you, and I reckon that Amy and Ashley’s engagement at Whitby Abbey will definitely be one of them.

It all started months before hand, with Ashley getting in touch to ask about photography for his big planned Whitby Abbey proposal to his girlfriend Amy. When he first mentioned Whitby Abbey was the location we just knew we had to be there. Whitby is by far one of our favourite places and there is so much magic and history at the Abbey itself...not to mention that it is a gothic dream!

Lets just say that a few emails and a phonecall later and we might have been just as invested in the day going well as Ashley! The plans were all set in place, a few cheeky ways to throw Amy off the scent along the way, and we were all set to meet up in November at Whitby Abbey for the big surprise...or so we thought. Really though, does anything really ever go 100% according to plan?

Ashley had initially been ready to surprise Amy with the proposal, but she found out that morning. Of course when they arrived at Whitby Abbey to see it was closed, only to then be allowed in privately, she might have sensed something was up! Hilariously we didn't get that memo and so as they arrived at Whitbey Abbey Emily was hiding behind a stone wall so that she wouldn't be seen. Honestly though, it just made the day even sweeter that Amy was in on it. They were both relaxed but excited, and you could tell they were both so ready for this big moment.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect either. It was the day after Whitby Goth Weekend, which matched Amy’s vibe like a dream...seriously what a cool couple! Whitby Abbey, with its ruins and moody atmosphere was the perfect scene especially as they were the only people there. After some congratulations and cuddles from their family who were secretly waiting patiently outside the Abbey walls with flowers (probably the most gorgeous bouquet ever check out the photos) we wandered around the abbey and the nearby graveyard for a few hours taking photos and chatting about their relationship. You really could see how over the moon they were to be engaged and it was a gorgeous event to be a part of.

After we wrapped up the photo session, Amy and Ashley headed off to celebrate with their family in Whitby for the evening, who’d been patiently waiting to share the excitement.

It was such a privilege to be a part of their special day. Even though the surprise didn’t go exactly as planned on Ashleys end, the absolute joy they shared made it absolutely perfect. Congratulations again, Amy and Ashley—you two were amazing to work with!
